IYOM ABAM ONYERUBI MAKES HISTORY, CELEBRATES FIRST GENERAL CONGRESS.

August 13, 2024, marked a significant milestone in the history of Iyom Abam Onyerubi as the Development Union held its inaugural General Congress. The event, themed “A Call for Unity Among Iyom Abam,” brought together women from all walks of life, both home and abroad, to forge a united frontier for the development of Abam Onyerubi.
Speaking in the occasion, the President of Iyom Abam Development Union, Lady Nne Oriona Umeh (JP), welcomed participants, stating, “Today marks the birth of a vision that has been nurtured, groomed, and blossomed to fulfill its purpose.” She outlined the union’s objectives, including:
1. Empowerment and support of women through training, skills, and empowerment of youth, girl child, widows, and the aged.
2. Promoting unity and progress in Iyom Abam and Abia State.
3. Advocacy and representation, amplifying the voice of Abam women at state and local levels.
4. Driving rapid development in Abam.
5. Protecting and supporting Abam women from oppression, domestic violence, abuse, and neglect.
Elder Professor Mrs. Kate I. Oreh delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of unity among Abam women. She defined unity as being united, joined as a whole, having agreement, harmony, and a sense of oneness among individuals.
The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, commended the Iyom Abam Onyerubi for their determination and strength in hosting the historic event. He pledged his support and announced a donation of 2,500 branded wrappers to promote unity among Abam women.
The Majority Leader of the 8th Assembly, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, commended the Iyom Abam Onyerubi for their initiative. “I am impressed the unity and strength of purpose demonstrated the women of Abam Onyerubi,” he said. “As a leader, I pledge to support your efforts to empower women and drive development in Abam. I will empower twelve business women in each of the wards that make up Abam to support them in their businesses.”
Engr. Iro Awa, a philanthropist and supporter of the union, praised the women for their vision and determination. “I am moved the passion and commitment of the Iyom Abam Onyerubi,” he said. “I pledge to support your efforts with a donation of N5 million to help drive your development initiatives.”
The General Manager of Abia News Paper, Hon. Jones Nnanna Ike, also spoke at the event, encouraging the women to continue their good work. “I will keep supporting Iyom Abam Onyerubi anytime you call on me,” he said. “Let the unity I see in you continue to blossom, as it will change the narrative of Abam Clan without delay.”
Chief Dr. Anderson Okoro, represented Agwu Chika Uda, encouraged the women to maintain unity and transparency. “I urge you to hold peace and unity firm, abhor sentiment, and hold transparency tight,” he said. “These values will help you achieve your goals and drive development in Abam.” Chief Okoro also announced a cash donation to support the union’s initiatives.
Her Excellency, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, the wife of the Abia State Governor, served as the Mother of the Day. She urged the Iyom Abam to embrace peace, unity, and parental responsibility, and supported their vision with a cash donation.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the President General of Iyom Abam Development Union, Lady Nne Oriona Ukaike Umeh (JP), who appreciated all participants and donors for their contributions to the success of the occasion.
